Ideas on what to do to attract more people that wish to live in Bruderheim

By Walter Schneider

Keep sidewalks in good shape

When I went around May 17-20, 2005 to take photos of a few problems that need to be addressed if we wish to attract more families to move to and settle in Bruderheim, I came across a situation that may be worth mentioning.

It is hard to tell what it is that runs off through the gutter in the sidewalk shown in the photo on the right (the gutter is covered with a board and runs out from under the porch right next to it).

However, is there any truth to the rumour that there is one house where raw sewage is regularly being discharged into Spring Creek where the creek crosses Highway 45?
Didn't we stop doing that sort of thing right after the middle ages?  It would seem that involves a few bylaw violations (e. g.: 3.5.5), but, the way the bylaws are written, the owner has a way out.  Firstly, there appears to be nothing in the bylaws that prohibits anyone from discharging sewage in an unsanitary manner.  Secondly, an owner doing so could even argue that by letting his sewage run off he complies explicitly with the bylaws because he doesn't let it accumulate, and that therefore he is following the letter of the law.
In the meantime, if that rumour about sewage running into the creek is true, would it perhaps be appropriate to post signs downstream from that house to prohibit parents from letting children play in or around the creek for as long as that danger to the public health exists?  After all, what their children bring home from the creek might not only be a frog but something that's alive with little things not quite so appealing.

The gutter in the sidewalk at 51st Ave covered by the board doesn't appear to pose problems to anyone using that sidewalk, but the gutter just a few steps to the west in the same sidewalk does.  It appears that is has done that for quite a while.
The board that is supposed to cover that gutter is rotten or broken and is at the bottom of the gutter, almost completely covered with silt.  What are we waiting for, for someone to break his foot before that board gets replaced?

Did you know that there is a concrete sidewalk at the west-side of Highway 45 and south of 48th Ave, towards the rail-road crossing?  That may only be of historical interest.  That sidewalk is almost completely grown over with grass.  Apparently even the power company crew that replaced the poles along highway 45 didn't know that sidewalk was there.  That must be why they planted the pole at the corner of Highway 45 and 48th Ave right into the sidewalk.  It makes one wonder whether they carried a jack hammer with them or whether they had to make an extra trip to get one, so that they could smash through the sidewalk.  They did not restore the sidewalk.  Did the Town Office give its permission for putting the power pole into the sidewalk?
